Born to the proud parents of the late Bessie Sykes and Willie Poe in Monroe County. She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined New Hebron M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Parson. She later joined Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Aberdeen where she served faithfully as Superintendent of Sunday School and Club Leader #3 for many years before her health failed her. She worked many jobs during her lifetime: private sitter, school teacher, beautician, insurance agent, Columbus Air Force Base, and Demarion Janitorial. Sis Sykes was avery active member in the community. She was a member of the Heriones of Jericho, Democratic Election Committee, and served as secretary of the NAACP. In 1996, she received the Fannie Lue Hamer Award from the democratic party for the State of MS.

She was preceded in death by 3 sisters; Leomia Sykes James, Mary Lee Tagger, and Lucy Metcalf; 7 uncles, Abel, Derrie, Willie James, Robert Nesby, Willie and Walter Sykes; 2 great-aunts, Emma Gray and Atel Sykes.

Survivors include: 3 sons, Maurice (Sharon) Edmond and Fredrick Sykes of Aberdeen, MS, and Larry (Linda) Sykes of Katlerboch, Germany; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; 3 special friends, Sis Lee Anna Williams, Sis Mary B. Minnis, and Sis Eternal Cook; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
